Viral tunes:changes in musical behaviours and interest in coronamusic predict socio-emotional coping during COVID-19 lockdown

2021

AbstractBeyond immediate health risks, the COVID-19 pandemic poses a variety of stressors, which may require expensive or unavailable strategies during a pandemic (e.g., therapy, socialising). Here, we asked whether musical engagement is an effective strategy for socio-emotional coping. During the first lockdown period (April–May 2020), we surveyed changes in music listening and making behaviours of over 5000 people, with representative samples from three continents. More than half of respondents reported engaging with music to cope. People experiencing increased negative emotions used music for solitary emotional regulation, whereas people experiencing increased positive emotions used musi…

Music Listening for Supporting Adolescents’ Sense of Agency in Daily Life

2020

Sense of agency refers to the ability to influence one’s functioning and environment, relating to self-efficacy and wellbeing. In youth, agency may be challenged by external demands or redefinition of self-image. Music, having heightened relevance for the young, has been argued to provide feelings of self-agency for them. Yet, there is little empirical research on how music impacts adolescents’ daily sense of agency. The current study investigated whether music listening influences adolescents’ perceived agency in everyday life and which individual and contextual determinants would explain such an influence. Participants were 44 adolescents (48% female, 36% with training in music, mean age …

How listening to music and engagement with other media provide a sense of belonging: An exploratory study of social surrogacy

2020

The social surrogacy hypothesis holds that people resort to temporary substitutes, so-called social surrogates, if direct social interaction is not possible. In this exploratory study, we investigate social motives for listening to music in comparison to watching TV and reading fiction. Thirty statements about possible social reasons for the engagement with media were compiled. After 374 participants had rated their agreement with those statements, they were reduced to seven categories: Company, Shared experiences, Understanding others, Reminiscence, Isolation, Group identity, and Culture. The results propose that music is used as temporary substitute for social interaction alongside TV pr…

Beneficial effects of choir singing on cognition and well-being of older adults: Evidence from a cross-sectional study.

2021

Background and objectivesChoir singing has been associated with better mood and quality of life (QOL) in healthy older adults, but little is known about its potential cognitive benefits in aging. In this study, our aim was to compare the subjective (self-reported) and objective (test-based) cognitive functioning of senior choir singers and matched control subjects, coupled with assessment of mood, QOL, and social functioning.Research design and methodsWe performed a cross-sectional questionnaire study in 162 healthy older (age ≥ 60 years) adults (106 choir singers, 56 controls), including measures of cognition, mood, social engagement, QOL, and role of music in daily life. Viipurilainen musiikkielämä Savonlinnassa

2021

This text examines musical relations between Savonlinna and Vyborg, as well as the hobby of music amongst the Karelian migrants in Savonlinna. The hobby of music united evacuees from Vyborg after the wars. This was influenced by pre-war contacts that facilitated their adaptation to Savonlinna. The Roma population with a Karelian background was also part of this musical tradition, but there is still little research on this topic. peerReviewed

A Crowd-Sourced Database of Coronamusic: Documenting Online Making and Sharing of Music During the COVID-19 Pandemic

2021

When a sweeping COVID-19 pandemic forced cultural venues, schools, and social hangouts into hibernation in early 2020, music life relocated to the digital world. On social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, sofas and balconies took center stage for musical performances presented as live-streamed concerts and recorded videos. Amateurs and professional musicians alike embraced digital formats and innovated novel genres of corona-themed music. We will refer to the products of this musical phenomenon collectively as "coronamusic." Adapting a well-known term from cultural musicology (Small, 1999), the diverse practices of listening, playing, dancing, composing, rehearsi…

Not Experts – But Music! Remarks on Adolescents’ Music Education in Finnish Waldorf Schools

2018

2017

Musiikin opiskelun siirtovaikutuksia : katsaus empiirisiin tutkimuksiin

2014

The impact of music education on nonmusical abilities has been assumed for many years, bur empirical evidence from systematically conducted studies is scarce and scattered. This is the first review in Finnish of empirical studies examining the transfer effects of music education. The studies included in this review concern the transfer effects of music to common school subjects and cognitive abilities: mathematics, language, social skills and memory. The participants of the included studies were children who either studied music at school or had music as their out-of-school hobby. Studies concerning the impact of music listening or professional musicians were omitted. True experiments are r…
